Agroforestry Assisted Natural Farming in India: Challenges and Implications for Diversification and Restoration of Agroecosystem

Description

The article proposes combining agroforestry practices with natural farming methods to create a hybrid “agroforestry-assisted natural farming” model. This approach aims to overcome some of the challenges of natural farming alone by incorporating trees and livestock components.

Findings

Agroforestry can provide continuous inputs for natural farming preparations like jeevamrut and beejamrut, as well as biomass for mulching. The tree and livestock components can help diversify farm outputs and improve overall system resilience.

Stats

Around 2.5 million farmers in India are already practicing regenerative agriculture
Expected to reach 2 million hectares within 5 years, of which 1.2 million hectares are under natural farming
